Atlantic Squid, gutted and sliced for calamari.

Calamari

We carry calamari sourced from wild caught Atlantic Squid. These squid tend to have anywhere from a deep red color to a light pinkish-red color. As a defensive tactic to avoid predators, these squid can even change color to blend in with their environment. While some Atlantic Squid can have a dorsal mantle (this is the main body region) up to 20 inches, most commercial squids’ dorsal mantle measure 12 inches or less. They have incredibly short lifespans, usually living between 6-8 months. Interestingly, squid are carnivores, often eating small fish, shrimp, and other crustaceans.

How to Cook It

Our wild caught Atlantic Squid are cleaned and gutted, completely ready for the frier! The term “calamari” is derived from the Italian language. “Squid” in Italian is “calamaro”, so when made plural as squids, it becomes “calamari”.

A staple in many cultures, calamari is traditionally enjoyed fried but can also be sautéed. Use both the body and tentacles of the squid when making the dish. It is popular to serve the dish with marinara sauce and fried sliced cherry peppers for an added kick of heat.
